These are our days.

See if you can spot the little flaw here.

Once again, it seems that the apostrophe has won. The problem with this is that it’s from my place of employment. The place that would rather let pesky little apostrophes sneak through the cracks than give me a promotion and let me do the writing and editing for marketing materials. Ah, but who really cares about correct punctuation anymore, huh?  BTW, I’ve attempted to blur the name of the establishment to protect the innocent, including myself. I’ll say just one thing. I see this mistake over and over and over and…

  1. I can almost see the person hovering over their work, thinking about the apostrophe, ‘Do I? Don’t I? Hell, it’s little, nobody’ll notice it if I’m wrong.’

Your blog actually reminded me of the day the packers came to box our whole house up to be put into storage. I was ten. Having nothing to do, I wandered around watching them wrap everything up with lightning speed, close each box and write, ‘STORAGE’ on top. The one man I was watching had written, ‘STOAGE,’ and stood for a long time with his black marker poised. I remember thinking, “R! R!” He finally scribbled an R above it and I was equal parts relieved and saddened. When I see errors like that today, it kind of resurrects some of the pity I felt that day.

I wonder… does that make me compassionate or a literary snob at the age of ten?

  2. I love your little story about the packers and I’m glad to see that there’s someone else out there who sees these things!

  3. I see this mistake all the time. Hyphens are my downfall. I posted about store-bought pasta sauces the other day. Someone gently corrected me.

  4. Um, what’s wrong with store-bought pasta sauce? I think I over-hyphenate, but heck, it’s hard to know for sure!
